The First Year Experience at Florida Gulf Coast University

Welcome to the First Year Experience (FYE) at Florida Gulf Coast University. Because we recognize and honor the importance of transitions, we have created a unique experience to support high school seniors and others as they join the university community. We have learned that when we assist students in becoming part of university programs and activities, they have a much stronger chance for success.

We have developed several unique programs in the FYE to assist you in this transition

First Year Reading Project: All incoming First Year students read the same book and write two essays for their fall classes. In the past, students have had the opportunity to meet with the author.

Learning Academy: We have created a unique learning community open to all students. Students take their classes in groups of 20, creating a higher level of learning and connection to the campus. The Learning Academy is open to the first 80 students who complete the online application.

First Year Advising: Our first year advising system connects individual students with experienced advisors. We will not only work with you to build your class schedule, but also to discover your academic interests.

Orientation: All incoming first year students are required to attend orientation during the summer. The two day orientation provides students with a foundation for their transition to the university.

First Year Convocation: During the fall semester, first year students and their families are invited to participate in one of our newest ceremonies. At the Convocation, we formally welcome students into the university community.
