Undergraduate Out-of-State Tuition Waivers

Florida Gulf Coast University's Board of Trustees has authorized the Out-of-State Waivers for certain types of students to enhance campus diversity and academic quality in an ever increasing competitive student market. Waivers are based on the University's established key selection criteria of recruitment, retention, diversity and service and awarded to students who meet certain initial requirements. Student applicants must adhere to the application and renewal deadlines.

General Eligibility Criteria

  • Apply and be approved for admission to FGCU as a degree-seeking student
  • be an out-of-state student
  • be a first-time-in-college OR a transfer student
  • plan to be a full-time student; i.e., carry no fewer than 12 credit hours per term (waivers cover 12 credit hours)
  • achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.4, recalculated (academic units only)
  • achieve an SAT score of 1100 or an ACT score of 23
  • submit a Waiver Application Form by the deadline established for the term for which you are applying
  • meet any additional criteria required by the awarding department

Waiver

Undergraduate Out-of-State Student Waivers are awarded in conjunction with the admissions process and are not intended to be an entitlement. All awards cover a portion of the tuition cost and do not include coverage of requisite fees. Any student who applies for the award and meets the minimum criteria will be considered for a waiver. However the number of available waivers are limited and not every deserving student will receive an award.

Deadline Dates

  • Fall term: March 1
  • Spring term: November 30
  • Summer term: March 1

Applications received after the stated deadlines will not be considered.

What is the value of a Tuition Waiver?

An undergraduate out-of-state waiver covers the non-resident matriculation fee; that is, the differential between resident and non-resident tuition for a total of 12 credit hours. Waivers do not cover the requisite state and federal fees added to the tuition cost. Undergraduate out-of-state waivers are awarded to non-resident students only. For a breakdown of charges, refer to http://www.fgcu.edu/Cashiers/tuition-and-fees.html.

How are waivers awarded?

Students receiving an award will be sent a letter indicating both the number of credit hours and the semesters for which they apply. Fall awards will normally cover both the fall and the spring semesters. If you were awarded for both semesters you do not need to reapply for the spring. The waiver will be granted provided you meet the renewal criteria. You will be notified if you do not quality for the second semester.

Spring and summer award will normally be granted for one semester only and students will have to reapply for subsequent waivers.

The number of awards granted in any given term is subject to budgetary allocation and will vary from year to year. Students cannot be guaranteed to receive more than 24 credit hours of the waiver. Priority for the awards will be given to new students, and students with less than 24 hours of waiver awarded. Applicants with more than 24 hours of previous waiver awarded will be considered if there are available funds.

Keeping Your Waiver

Waiver renewal is not automatic!

Your award is guaranteed for one term only--summer, fall or spring--the term for which you initially receive your waiver. Renewal depends on a number of requirements that you must meet given the pool of applicants:

You are expected to maintain full-time student status (enrolled minimum 12 credit hours) and a 3.4 grade point average for the term in which you receive your waiver.

A Tuition Waiver Review Committee will meet after the designated deadline(s) to review applications and make the appropriate awards distribution.

Florida Residency

Students receiving an Out-of-State waiver should ascertain if they will be able to gain Florida Residency for tuition purposes. Applications for reclassification and the rules for Florida Residency are available on our Web site.
