Remedial Guidance

Florida Gulf Coast University maintains minimum test score requirements for admission.  If your SAT/ACT scores are below these minimums in any of the three basic areas (sentence skills, reading, or mathematics), you are considered to be remedial in that area, and must address this issue as soon as possible, so that you have the academic skills necessary to be successful in college.

Options for meeting remediation

Many students resolve their remedial academic areas by retaking the ACT or the SAT to raise their scores to the minimum acceptable level for admission to the university.  These scores include:

  • Mathematics: ACT Math 19 or above; SAT 24 or above (revised mathematics test score) OR SAT 440 or above (old section score)
  • Writing: ACT English Language Arts 17 or above; SAT 25 or above (revised reading test score) OR SAT 440 or above (old writing section score)
  • Sentence Skills (English): ACT  English 17 or above; SAT 24 or above (revised reading test score)
  • Reading: ACT Reading 19 or above; SAT 24 or above (revised reading test score) OR SAT 440 or above (old critical reading section score)

Some students will try to meet remediation by taking the College Placement Test (Accuplacer) prior to attending Eagle View Orientation. Minimum scores on the CPT that are needed to meet remediation include:

  • Elementary Algebra CPT – score of 72 or higher
  • English Sentence Skills CPT - score of 83 or higher
  • Reading CPT - score of 83 or higher

If you wish to attempt the CPT through the FGCU Testing Center prior to attending orientation, you MUST contact us first in order to be given a referral.  The FGCU testing office will not schedule anyone to take the CPT without an advisor referral.

  • You may also take the CPT at your local state college (community college) or 4-year college/university.  If you take the CPT at another institution, test results must be faxed directly from the testing center where the test was administered to FGCU's Testing Office at (239) 590-7732.
  • NOTE: You will have the opportunity to take the CPT in each subject area for which you are remedial when you attend Eagle View Orientation.

If you have not met test score standards after attending Eagle View Orientation, you can enroll in remedial coursework at a State College:

  • Mathematics - MAT 0057 at Florida Southwestern State College, or an equivalent course at your local community college.
  • English - ENC 0022 at Florida Southwestern State College, or an equivalent course at your local community college.
  • Reading - REA 0019 at Florida Southwestern State College, or an equivalent course at your local community college.
