Mentoring Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of The Center for Academic Achievement Peer Mentoring Program is to increase student retention and academic performance through direct interaction between the student and a peer mentor.

Objectives

  • To provide academic support and personal guidance for students which will enable them to better understand the challenges of college and enhance their opportunities for success.
  • To develop a strong, positive identification with the university through interaction with successful FGCU students.
  • To assist students in coping with unique social environment and associated difficulties (i.e. lack of role models, cultural isolation, lack of peers in class and dorms).
  • To improve communication between students and others
  • To develop a sense of community and "belonging" within the university environment
  • To make referrals to appropriate professional services, such as tutorial services (etc.), in addition to developing a resource guide to share with your students regarding programs, offices, and other places that will be helpful to students.
  • To encourage students' involvement in all aspects of university life by accompanying students to monthly student organization meeting and/or cultural events.
  • To serve as a role model by sharing one's own personal experience and strategies for overall students success.
  • To identify any potential problems that will interfere with the accomplishment of the student's educational goals and to inform the advisor of those problems

Note: All mentees are participants of the Peer Mentoring Program and have either requested to have a mentor or were encouraged by an advisor to have one.
