Vincent Encomio is a postdoctoral research associate with the Coastal Watershed Institute at Florida Gulf Coast University. He received his doctorate in marine science in 2004 from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary. His research interests are shellfish biology and the influence of environmental stress on physiological and biochemical adaptations in marine and estuarine invertebrates. He is particularly interested in using physiological and biochemical indices to assess the influence of watershed alterations on wild and cultured shellfish populations. Several bivalve species found along estuarine salinity gradients are ideal candidates for monitoring such alterations. Dr. Encomio's research involves both lab and field research on these species in order to determine how mechanisms at the biochemical level link with population and community level processes. He is also involved in teaching courses in marine science and biology at FGCU and has mentored undergraduate and graduate students in their research.
