Dr. Parsons is a Professor of Marine Science at Florida Gulf Coast University and Director of FGCU's Coastal Watershed Institute. He was a State of Louisiana Board of Regents Fellow and received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 1996 in Biological Oceanography. He currently serves on the National Harmful Algal Bloom Committee and on theeditorial board of the journal, Harmful Algae, and was awarded the Senior Faculty Scholarship Excellence Award atFlorida Gulf Coast University in Spring 2013. Parsons has been Principal Investigator on competitive, extramuralgrants worth over $4.3 million and co-PI on an additional $35+ million in grant funding. His 30+ peer-reviewed publications have been cited over 1100 times in the scientific literature. He is the principal investigator of therecently-awarded NOAA ECOHAB regional grant entitled “CiguaHAB: Ciguatera Investigations in the Greater Caribbean Region: Ecophysiology, Population Connectivity, Forecasting, and Toxigenesis.” This five-year, $4 million project involves an international team of eight researchers who are collecting and analyzing data from throughout the Greater Caribbean Region to study the conditions that lead to higher toxin production in the algae and transfer to fish, which can ultimately lead to better predictions of ciguatera outbreaks in order to protect human health.
