Professor Sutton’s first project, Catholic Modernists, English Nationalists, discusses the influence of Catholic thought on English modernism and examines the work of Catholic converts who shaped the aesthetics and politics of the modernist period. The book connects the recusant Catholics in England to modernist converts. Chapters focus on Gerard Manley Hopkins, Ford Madox Ford, T. S. Eliot, Evelyn Waugh, and Graham Greene.
Dr. Sutton is now working on a project that traces the development of eugenic notions in modernist writers and considers the rise of neo-eugenics and the post-Holocaust novel in Europe.
