Sharon Isern is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and a member of the Biotechnology Research Group at Florida Gulf Coast University. She received her B.S. in Chemical Engineering (1989) at The Johns Hopkins University and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (1996) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her research interests as a molecular virologist include: viral entry pathways, development of molecular tools for the transgenesis of invertebrates, evaluation of bioactives and small molecule chemistries for antiviral activity, development of novel antiviral entry inhibitors, and decontamination of viral targets using photochemical systems. Dr. Isern has received research support from the NIH, NSF, DOD, USDA and several private foundations and biotechnology companies.
