Jeanie Darnell, Associate Professor of Music and Head of Vocal Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music, teaches courses in Applied Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, and Voice Literature. As a concert artist Darnell has been hailed by critics throughout the United States and in Europe for her “wonderfully bell-like tones” (Wertheimer Zeitung). A regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1998, she has been in demand as soprano soloist of major concert and oratorio repertoire, and most recently was featured as soloist on the opera pops concert with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and as First Lady in Opera Naples Production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Orchestral works performed by Darnell include Vaughn Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem with the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers, Mozart Requiem with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Omaha Symphony, Bach’s B Minor Mass at the Denver Bach Festival, Mozart’s Dominican Vespers with the Arkansas Chamber Orchestra, and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Handel’s Messiah at the Lindsborg Messiah Festival in Kansas. A champion of new music, she presented modern art songs by the featured composers Lori Laitman and Richard Hundley at “The Songs Across the Americas Festival” and has premiered songs by composers Robert Boury, Marcia Marchesi, Timothy Snyder, and Z. Randall Stroope.
Darnell completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2002 while already heading the voice area as Assistant Professor of Music at University of Nebraska at Omaha. She has lectured on the male adolescent voice at the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) 2009 Paris Conference, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) 2008 National Conference, and the ICVT 2005 Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. She also has lectured on recital repertoire from Schubert to Berg at College Music Society (CMS) regional conferences, and presented her research on “The Songs of Robert Boury” at the NATS National Conference in 2006.
Dr. Darnell taught as a faculty member of the Corsi Internazionali di Musica 2007 Summer Music Studies Program in Urbino, Italy, and has served on faculty at Ouachita Baptist University. Darnell participated in the 2004 NATS Intern Program under master teacher Dr. Robert McIvor, Chair of Vocal Studies at Eastman School of Music. Her voice pupils have placed at district and regional competitions, and have been selected to participate in summer programs and internships, with the Bethesda Summer Music Festival, Opera Naples, VOICExperience, the Stephen Foster’s Story Music Festival, the Memphis Playhouse, and Operafestival di Roma.
