Matthew Medlock (b.1976) was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He began playing the double bass at age twelve and made his solo debut at age seventeen with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. After graduating high school Mr. Medlock moved to Boston to attend Boston University where he received his Bachelors in Music, and then to further his education moved to Houston, Texas where he received his Masters in Music from Rice University. While attending Rice University he had the opportunity to perform for an extended time with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Medlock is a two-year Tanglewood Music Center Fellow. He has played with Spoleto, Italy Festival Orchestra, the Key West Symphony and the Iris Chamber Orchestra (Michael Stern, conductor) and has been on faculty with the Eastern Music Festival. Mr. Medlock’s primary teachers include Edwin Barker, principal of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Timothy Pitts, principal of the Houston Symphony Orchestra; Paul Ellison, Rice University professor and former principal of the Houston Symphony Orchestra; and Greg Dugan, member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Medlock currently performs as a core member of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and is the double bass teacher at Florida Gulf Coast University.
