“Thomas Adés’s America: A Prophecy”
Guest Lecture - Drew Massey, musicologist, Fellow, National Endowment for the Humanities
Tues., Feb 21, 2012 at 7:30 pm
Music Building U. Tobe Recital Hall

$7 per ticket.  Purchase Tickets

In his lecture, Dr. Massey will explore the work America: A Prophecy by noted contemporary British composer Thomas Adés (b. 1971).  In 1999, Adés responded to a commission from New York Philharmonic director Kurt Masur to write a “Message for the Millennium” to culminate in a concert of new pieces offering “a universal message of hope to the people of the world.”  Adés’s resulting work was a decided departure from Masur’s vision.  Dr. Massey will consider America: A Prophecy in the context of both Masur’s project and Adés’s larger compositional aesthetic.
