Department of Language & Literature

Welcome to the Department of Language and Literature webpage. In all that we do, we are dedicated to student success, and we invite you to explore the information provided here about our various programs.

Mission Statement

The Department of Language and Literature at FGCU engages in the intellectual collaboration of its three major fields: literature, languages, and writing. We teach written and oral communication by integrating skills-based assignments with critical thinking exercises and creative works, and we encourage students to investigate the cultural, ethical, and aesthetic elements of our curriculum. Our faculty members contribute to the scholarly community and interact with our university and the Southwest Florida region in various service endeavors. We uphold academic freedom, cultural and ideological diversity, historical awareness, and intellectual breadth as the foundations of our department’s values. Our faculty believes in the indispensability of our disciplines in providing a liberal arts education and in enriching the academic and life experiences of our students, and we support an environment of continuous learning that prepares students to contribute their expertise to a global community.
