Barry Cavin is beginning his second term as Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University. Before coming to FGCU, Mr. Cavin lived in Long Beach, California where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in directing from the prestigious theatre school at the University of California at Irvine and where he taught at Chapman University and directed at various sites in the Southern California area. Mr. Cavin has enjoyed a lengthy career as a director and as theatre artistic administrator as well as a teacher of acting and directing. His principal professional focus is directing and designing works for the stage. He has directed and designed over forty fully produced plays during his career. Among his most recent works at FGCU are: The Living Blog: Apocalypse, written and directed by Mr. Cavin, The Bald Soprano by Eugène Ionesco, Savage/Night (Mr. Cavin's conceptualization of works by Joseph Chaikin, Sam Shepard, and Heiner Müller,), Kaspar by Peter Handke, and Woyzeck by Georg Büchner. Recent works in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas include: By the Skin of our Teeth by Thornton Wilder, Oleana by David Mamet, Marking Nia an original play by Mr. Cavin which premiered in the theatre district of Los Angeles, The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, and The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mr. Cavin is delighted to be serving the university in his current capacity and is looking forward to working with the people of Southwest Florida to build interest in the visual and performing arts which are quickly becoming a major part of the lives of the people who live in our region.
