Prof. Duke teaches and leads research in the areas of:

  • Water quality policy. Critical analysis, effectiveness assessment, and analysis of impacts of environmental policies on the aquatic environment: federal, state, and regional policies and regulations; watershed management decisions; water quality standards. Statistical methods for watershed management. Quantification of pollutant sources and discharges in urban runoff.
  • Water quality assessment. Watershed-based analyses of sources, temporal and spatial distribution of pollutant sources and ambient constituents, and statistical analyses for water quality assessment. Development and alternative assessment for watershed and regional programs. Transport, fate, and effects of pollutants in urban storm water discharges.
  • Scientific basis of environmental decision-making. Effectiveness of current policies and methods for use of environmental data, modeling forecasts, and stakeholder preferences in environmental policies: selection of water quality standards; allocation of pollutant loads among sources.
  • Critical analysis of environmental policies. Development, analysis, and post-implementation effectiveness assessment of policies, regulations, and regional programs for protection and restoration of environmental systems, especially aquatic systems.
  • Industrial pollution prevention. Origin, fate, and effects of industrial pollutants: wastewater pollutants, hazardous and toxic substances, and pollutants in industrial runoff. Quantification of pollutant sources, risk assessment and decision-making for industrial hazardous substances.

Southwest Florida Water Resources Conference Prof Duke has served as the Technical Chair for this outstanding meeting in 2009 and 2010. The conference is jointly sponsored by the state and local chapters of a number of professional societies, including: the American Water Resources Association; American Society of Civil Engineers; Southwest Florida Watershed Council; Southwest Florida Association of Environmental Professionals; Southwest Florida Audubon; and Caloosahatchee Riverwatch.
