Dr. Laliya Yakhyaeva received her PhD. (Doctor Nauk) in Sociology from Moscow Academy of Social Sciences in 1991. She has had solid research, teaching, and administrative experience in the former Soviet Union, as well as teaching experience in the United States as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences here at FGCU.
Dr. Laliya taught Sociology of Culture, Religion and International Relations, at Tashkent State University of World Economy and Diplomacy, and also at University of Art of Uzbekistan.
She has taught at Florida Gulf Coast University for the last 3 years including courses such as: Comparative Sociology: Global Issues, South and Central Asian Civilization. In addition, she is developing a new upper-level course - Modern World Muslim and National Movements.
Her scholarly interests are wide-ranging: the sociology of history, policy of Modern Islamic and National Movements, World Culture, and Women's Issues in Eastern Societies.
She is always involved not only in professional activities, but also in service to her departments, universities, and communities of which she is a member. For example, here in the United States, she participates in the scholarly activities of the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CEES) and Islamic Studies of Harvard University.
Locally, she is an active member of the Lee County Human Trafficking Task Force Esperanza Project.
