Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Communicate in the Spanish language (in written and oral forms).
- Effectively understand and interpret real language (written and spoken) in formal and informal settings.
- Analyze the products (e.g., literature, film, etc.) of Spanish-speaking cultures to demonstrate how they reflect the perspectives of those cultures.
- Synthesize the differences and similarities between the student's culture and the cultures of Spanish speaking groups, societies or countries.
- Examine sources of information available to native speakers of Spanish to analyze, compare and synthesize the different perspectives of information given in different cultures including their own.
Content/discipline knowledge and skills are assessed at the college and departmental levels through the Senior Student Portfolio completed in SPN 4920 evaluated by program faculty and two external reviewers. The portfolio contains, among other work, essays, recordings/videos of oral presentations, and research papers. Assessment is also evaluated by program faculty through observations of informal student interactions with native Spanish speakers, including integrated service-learning projects in core courses.
Communication Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Employ the conventions of standard written English.
- Select a topic, and develop it for a specific audience and purpose, with respect for diverse perspectives.
- Select, organize, and relate ideas and information with coherence, clarity, and unity.
Communication skills are assessed as part of the General Education Program through papers, exams, and projects completed in ENC 1101 Composition I, ENC 1102 Composition II, and HUM 2510 Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts. Communication skills are also assessed in the capstone courses.
Critical Thinking Skills
Graduates will be able to:
- Select and organize information.
- Identify assumptions and underlying relationships.
- Synthesize information, and draw reasoned inferences.
- Formulate an appropriate problem solving strategy.
- Evaluate the feasibility of the strategy.
Critical thinking skills are assessed as part of the General Education Program through papers, exams, and projects completed ENC 1101 Composition I, ENC 1102 Composition II, and HUM 2510 Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts. Critical thinking skills are also assessed in the capstone courses.
