SPN3300
Spanish Composition
The focus of this class is the writing process. The course is designed to develop writing skills in order to produce effective and culturally appropriate written Spanish. The course exposes the students to the linguistic structure of Spanish as well as to different writing styles. Writing intensive. Class, assignments, and tests are all in Spanish. This is a required course for majors. Pre-requisite: SPN 2201 or equivalent, Placement Test, or Instructor's permission.

Spanish Culture and Civilization
This course examines Spanish culture from pre-historical accounts through its different stages—Roman, Islamic, the medieval Christian re-Conquest, Renaissance, imperial rise and decline through the 20th century. Lectures, discussion, class activities in Spanish only. Pre-requisite: at least 6 semesters of Spanish including Composition (SPN 3300), Advanced Oral Expression (SPN 3411), Instructor authorization. Assessment: papers, oral reports, Midterm/Final exams.

Topics in 20th Cent Span Literature
This course offers a sampling of selected works by authors from the so-called Catastrophe of 1898—a coalescence of the Spanish-American War and the failed colonial war in Morocco—through the Restoration of King Juan Carlos I towards the end of the Franco regime. The course aims to give an overview of the major trends in Spanish literature of this period. Close attention is given to different strains of critique of national identity and history found in Generación del 98 writers, as well as texts preceding and produced during the Civil War, the ensuing Franco ideology and its crisis during the transition to modern democracy in Spain. Through close readings of selected texts, we will focus on problems of literary analysis and the evolution of Spanish letters in their historical context. Emphasis is placed on texts as cultural artifacts. Lectures, discussions, and class activities are in Spanish only; requires and advanced level for intensive reading, writing, and communication skills. Recommended for Spanish majors. Pre-requisite: at least 6 semesters of Spanish, including Composition (SPN 3300), and Advanced Oral Expression (SPN 3411), or Instructor authorization. Masterpieces of Spain’s Golden Age
This course surveys seminal works of Renaissance and Baroque Spain—the period between the Catholic Monarchs Isabella & Ferdinand through the Austrian Hapsburg dynasty which turned the kingdom into the first western empire of the modern era 1471-1700. A close reading of selected texts covering poetry, fiction, drama, and the particular used of the essay in the period will focus on on literary analysis and historical context. Lectures, discussions, and course activities in Spanish only; requires an advanced level for intensive reading, writing, and communication skills. Recommended for Spanish majors. Pre-requisites: At least 6 semesters of Spanish including Composition (SPN 3300), and Advanced Oral Expression (SPN 3411). Assessment: papers, oral reports, Midterm/Final exams
