Andrew Rowan Executive Vice President, The Humane Society of the United States
Andrew Rowan is Executive Vice President for operations for The Humane Society of the United States. He also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Humane Society International, and President of the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education. Dr. Rowan oversees all international programs and regional offices nationwide, domestic animal programs, wildlife and habitat protection, and all education programs.
He currently serves as a member of the advisory committee on animal testing for Royal Dutch Shell, and with the National Institutes of Health ad hoc advisory committee on chimpanzee sanctuaries. Dr. Rowan worked as consultant for alternatives to animal research for the Department of Defense programs (1998), and served as chair of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's working group on the bioethics of animal research (1996). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Before joining The HSUS, Dr. Rowan served as Director of the Tufts University Center for Animals and Public Policy (1984-1997); Chairman of the department of environmental studies at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine (1995-1997); Professor, associate professor and assistant professor in the department of environmental studies at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine (1983-1997); and founding editor of the International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems (1979-1982).
Dr. Rowan holds a doctorate of philosophy in biochemistry from Oxford University (1975). He received an MA from Oxford University in 1971, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and general physiology, with distinction, from Cape Town University in 1968.
