Human Slavery:  Awareness & Action Symposium Series-

Join us for a series of free continuing education programs offering practical guidelines for practitioners as well as the lay public seeking a more in-depth understanding of issues and actions related to human trafficking.  This four part series will be held at the Sugden Welcome Center on Florida Gulf Coast University's campus.  Continental breakfast will be served.

CE1024: Identifying & Engaging Victims       

Thurs., Aug. 28, 2008   
Registration & Continental Breakfast: 8-8:30 a.m.
Program: 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon
Presenter:  Sandy Skelaney

3.5 contact hours for Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy & Mental Health Counseling and Nursing pending

 At the completion of this program, participants will:

  • Discuss the nature and scope of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE);
  • Describe the impact this type of trauma has on children;
  • Describe appropriate language and sensitivity to the problem;
  • Discuss how to identify victims of CSE;
  • Describe the impact of CSEC and the needs of the victims;
  • Describe ways in which service providers can assist the victims.

CE1025: The Psychobiology of Trauma
Thurs. Sept. 18,2008

At the completion of this program, participants will:

  • Discuss an overview of the psychobiology of trauma
  • Describe the impact that the psychobiology of trauma has on the brain, behavior and body
  • Describe what constitutes effective treatment for those who are traumatized.


CE1026: Understanding Critical Incident Stress, Trauma and PTSD

Thurs. Oct. 16, 2008

Program: 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon

                    Director of the Criminal Justice Office

 At the completion of this program, participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of critical incident stress, trauma and PTSD. 
  • Describe the impact of stress and trauma on the victim as well as the service provider. 
  • Have a better knowledge of critical incident stress debriefing and management.
  • Develop tools and skills to assist the victim.
  • Recognize how service providers can develop secondary trauma.
  • Learn exercises that can ease the emotional pain.


CE1027: Compassion Fatigue – Caring for the Caregiver

  •  Describe the prominent symptoms of CF
  •  Identify their own symptoms of CF
  •  Describe the impact on professional functioning
  •  Discuss prevention of and recovery from CF
  •  Develop outline for individual plan of action
