Cultural Immersion for AUPAIRS

2009 AuPairs at FGCU

AU PAIRS  - Come and join us for 3½ days of learning and  fun in sunny, tropical southwest Florida while earning 32 hours of continuing education credit.

Learn about the culture of America through class room instruction, discussions, field trips, projects and group work.  There will be two educational field trips and one night the au pairs will share their cultures by preparing an international dinner.

Field trips are designed to provide an understanding of the flora and fauna and history of Southwest Florida, and to introduce innovative farming and agricultural techniques pioneered in Southwest Florida and being utilized throughout the world.

·  At Babcock Ranch  you will see a side of Florida that is vanishing rapidly.  Visit a real “working ranch” engaged in raising beef cattle, farming, and mining operations.  They also operate wilderness tours.  You'll ride in a swamp buggy to view the ranch operations, as well as travel through the silent beauty of an ancient Florida cypress swamp. You may see native animals such as alligators, panthers, wild turkey, deer, and Florida cracker cattle up close and natural. A professional tour guide comments on the wildlife, ranch activities, and history of the area.

·  ECHO Global Farm Tour  - this unique demonstration farm exists to  help those working internationally with the poor be more effective, providing agricultural information to overseas workers, distributing seeds for promising food plants, and offering training.  You will see demonstrations of alternate technologies, plants, and techniques useful to farmers and urban gardeners in developing countries. Experience various settings, taste leaves and berries while you explore rain-forest habitats, see farm animals raised by interns, stop at a simulated Haitian school, and witness urban gardening techniques that allow gardens on rooftops.

The location for this long weekend is Fort Myers, situated on the gulf coast of  Florida.
