Karen graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a major in Special Education. She earned a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University. Karen was employed by Fairfax County Public Schools, VA for 21 years where she held a variety of teaching and occupational therapy positions, as well as that of the county's Specialist for the Program for Students with Physical Disabilities. Upon coming to Florida, Karen was employed as an occupational therapist in the rehabilitation department of a skilled nursing facility, an out-patient clinic serving the frail elderly in an assisted living facility, and as a private contractor with several home care agencies. Karen is a founding member of the Florida Gulf Coast University Department of Occupational Therapy and Community Health which was begun October 1997.
