Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the use of technical skills consistent with current practice in athletic training
  2. Perform in the field of athletic training with entry-level professional behaviors.
  3. Pursue and participate in community activities related to athletic training as part of his/her professional and civic responsibility.
  4. Evaluate and manage injuries within the scope of athletic training practice.
  5. Synthesize and analyze information concerning a client in order to establish an appropriate athletic training intervention plan.
  6. Appropriately use and modify written, oral, and non-verbal communication with clients, families and colleagues.
  7. Practice effectively within the athletic training environment.

Content/discipline knowledge and skills are assessed at the college and departmental levels
through the following:

  1. PHT 3363C Introduction to Athletic Training: Subset Skill Evaluations, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  2. PET 3613C Athletic Training Practice I: Subset Skills Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  3. PET 3614C Athletic Training Practice II: Subset Skills Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills, Preparticipation exam.
  4. PET 4619C Athletic Training Practice III: Subset Skills Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  5. PET 4629C Athletic Training Practice IV: Subset Skills Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  6. PET 4670 Clinical Practice I: Clinical Assessment Tool, Subset Skill Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  7. PET 4671 Clinical Practice II: Clinical Assessment Tool, Subset Skill Evaluation, Proficiency Assessment of skills.
  8. Dept of Physical Therapy and Human Performance Professional Behaviors Plan Fall and Spring Semester (Junior and Senior year).
  9. PET 4930 Preparing for Entering and Growing in the Profession: Mock Athletic Training Board of Certification Exam, Cumulative Portfolio.
Communication Skills

Graduates will be able to: Graduates will be able to:

  1. Employ the conventions of standard written English.
  2. Select a topic, and develop it for a specific audience and purpose, with respect for diverse perspectives.
  3. Select, organize, and relate ideas and information with coherence, clarity, and unity.

Communication skills are assessed as part of the General Education Program through papers, exams, and projects completed in ENC 1101 Composition I, ENC 1102 Composition II, and HUM 2510 Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts. Communication skills are also assessed in the capstone course.

Critical Thinking Skills

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Select and organize information.
  2. Identify assumptions and underlying relationships.
  3. Synthesize information, and draw reasoned inferences.
  4. Formulate an appropriate problem solving strategy.
  5. Evaluate the feasibility of the strategy.

Critical thinking skills are assessed as part of the General Education Program through papers, exams, and projects completed ENC 1101 Composition I, ENC 1102 Composition II, and HUM 2510 Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts. Critical thinking skills are also assessed in the capstone course.

Student Learning Outcomes for the Athletic Training Education Program:

  • Model PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIORS that are consistent with professional excellence and the expectations of the profession and the consumer.
  • Practice utilizing TECHNICAL SKILLS consistent with entry into the field of Athletic Training.
  • Experience areas of PERSONAL GROWTH necessary for the transition into becoming a professional
  • Recognize the importance of and pursue COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT as part of his/her professional and civic responsibility
  • Appropriately use and modify written, oral, and non-verbal COMMUNICATION with clients, families, and colleagues
  • Practice effectively and are able to respond to CHANGE within a dynamic professional environment.
