Dr. Loureen Downes is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner who joined FGCU in 2006. She has over 30 years of experience in a variety of clinical settings, including primary health care, emergency room, cardiac rehabilitation, critical care and cardiac catheterization. In addition, she has 12 years of experience as an educator in both undergraduate and graduate nursing education. She earned her BSN degree from Southern Adventist University, her MSN degree and education as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Florida Atlantic University and her PhD degree from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Downes’ research interest is focused on the prevention and management of chronic diseases with and emphasis on type 2 diabetes mellitus through diet and exercise behaviors. She has presented regionally and nationally at nursing conferences speaking on topics related lifestyle behaviors.
Currently, Dr. Downes teaches in the Primary Health Care Graduate Program and maintains a clinical practice as a nurse practitioner in primary care in the office and community setting.
When Dr. Downes is not working she enjoys walking, reading, and cooking vegetarian dishes.
