Karen graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a major in Special Education. She earned a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University. Karen was employed as a special education teacher, special education administrator and occupational therapist by Fairfax County Public Schools in VA for 21 years. In Florida, she has been a staff occupational therapist in a skilled nursing facility and in an out-patient clinic and has been a private contractor with several home health care agencies.
Karen joined FGCU in October, 1997 as a founding member of the Department of Occupational Therapy and Community Health. Her teaching interests are in the areas of development throughout the lifespan, with an emphasis on pediatrics, and health conditions that impair participation in the occupations of a person’s life. Karen is the Academic Coordinator of Fieldwork Education, and has made over 800 fieldwork placements for students in the first 12 graduating classes.
