Dr. Brian Bossak serves as Chair of the Department of Health Sciences. He joined Florida Gulf Coast University in August, 2013. He previously served as the Division Director of Environmental Health Sciences in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Bossak earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Geography from the University of Georgia, where he concentrated on geospatial analysis techniques (GIS, remote sensing, and photogrammetry). He earned a PhD in Geography from Florida State University, where he focused on environmental hazard analysis and preparedness. He completed a Mendenhall Post-doctoral Research Fellowship with the US Geological Survey, where he developed coastal hazard prediction models and was contracted as a Geospatial Technology Lead in the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he assisted in response to traveler’s health issues and developed maps to address updated vaccination guidelines and avian influenza preparedness. He later earned a Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, with a focus on vector-borne disease modeling, water quality, and the health implications of climate change.

Since 2009, Dr. Bossak has authored or co-authored work that has appeared in Journal of Urban Health, American Journal of Public Health, PLOS ONE, Health & Place, Geography Compass, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Medical Hypotheses, and the International Journal of Drug Policy. His teaching interests include epidemiology, research procedures, and public health biology, and extend to public health preparedness, medical geography, and global climate change and health. Dr. Bossak is currently working on a textbook (Essentials of Water Quality for Public Health) and he continues a line of research exploring the spatial dimensions of historical pandemics as an analogue to better understand the transmission dynamics of future epidemics. A chapter related to this line of inquiry is included in Spatial Analysis in Health Geography (May 2015). He recently completed a research project funded by the Georgia Sea Grant Program while serving as Principal Investigator, with the first research manuscript from this work forthcoming in Southeastern Geographer.

Dr. Bossak previously served terms as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Health and Medical Geography Specialty Group (HMGSG) of the Association of American Geographers (AAG). He is an affiliate of the Georgia Coastal Research Council, has been selected as a faculty inductee into Omicron Delta Kappa (the National Leadership Honor Society) and was recently elected to the Board of Governors for Friendship Centers, a senior-services organization located throughout SW Florida.
