FGCU Removes Section F of Proposed Master Plan
3/27/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University President Bill Merwin announced on Friday he will remove the proposed Section F in the University’s Comprehensive Campus Master Plan, which is presently undergoing a five-year review, in response to concern that the section could possibly steer land use at FGCU in the wrong direction.

Section F would have allowed the University to seek permission in the future to build on lands currently classified as upland preserves, with an accompanying responsibility to offset the activity with mitigation of other lands. The University does not have current plans to build on these areas, but campus planners felt it was important for the University to include the element as a possible strategy to accommodate future enrollment growth. FGCU enrollment is growing more than 10 percent annually and is expected to reach a 10,000 headcount in less than a decade.

FGCU gave campus and community groups an opportunity to review the Master Plan and give input, met with faculty and heard from citizens during public hearings.

The Responsible Growth Management Coalition, Estero Bay Agency and The Conservancy of Southwest Florida all opposed the clause.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public.
