Naples Women in Transition Establishes Endowed Scholarship at FGCU
5/11/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Women in Collier County over the traditional college student age will get an opportunity to attend Florida Gulf Coast University thanks to a new endowed scholarship fund made possible by the non-profit organization, Naples Women in Transition.

The goal of Naples Women in Transition is to support women experiencing life changes, such as death of a spouse, divorce, marriage, blended family, career change, retirement or spouse's retirement. "It is our hope that this gift will enable more women to turn the challenge of a life
transition into an opportunity," said former board member, Deborah Russell.

"We are extremely grateful to the Naples Women in Transition. This scholarship will financially assist many of our female students who
otherwise might not be able to attend and earn their degrees," said Judy Cassidy, FGCU Director of Advancement.

Naples Women in Transition established the scholarship fund with a gift of $20,000 to the FGCU Foundation. The State of Florida Ethics in
Business Scholarship Program matches the gift for a total $40,000. EIB funds are available to state schools on a first-come first-served basis.

"There are significant dollars available. Right now, the state will match dollar-for-dollar undergraduate scholarship funds established at FGCU under the Ethics in Business Scholarship Program," Cassidy said. "A named endowment fund - a scholarship that carries the name of a person or business in perpetuity - requires a minimum gift of $5,000. The state will match it dollar for dollar, up to $1 million."

Undergraduates who demonstrate a commitment to community service, have financial need and enroll in a course on business ethics are eligible
for EIB scholarships. Donors establishing these funds may specify additional criteria for student selection (examples: major, grade point average, place of residence). The Naples Women in Transition Scholarship will be available
only to women residing in Collier County who are over the traditional student age.

FGCU is an accredited comprehensive public university created to address the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and dedicated to providing a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities.
