FGCU Center for Positive Aging Offers Delta Society "Pet Partners" Training
10/17/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Center for Positive Aging invites pet owners to attend a Delta Society “Pet Partners” training class 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10 on the FGCU campus. This training session is only for the pet owner or person interested in assisting with the program.

Pet Partners “teams” consist of human volunteers and their pets trained in techniques of animal-assisted therapy and activity. The teams provide social, mental and physical stimulation to people with disabilities or who can’t have pets themselves. The program trains volunteers and screens their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. Minimum age for volunteers is 10 years.

Training is through hands-on workshops taught by Delta Society licensed instructors. Center for Positive Aging Director Linda L. Buettner, CTRS, is instructor for this workshop.

Delta Society is the leading international resource for the human-animal bond. It has been the force to validate the important role of animals for people’s health and well-being by promoting the results of research to the media, and health and human services organizations. Over 2,500 Pet Partners teams now operate in 45 states and four other countries, helping more than 350,000 people each year.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as hosting the Center for Positive Aging.

Cost for training is $50 and includes a book. Seating is limited to 20. Participants should bring lunch and snacks for breaks. Registration can be made by check payable to FGCU Pet Therapy. Send to:
