"Dealing with Difficult People" Workshop Offered by FGCU Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Managers, supervisors and staff from the public and nonprofit sectors are invited to attend a full-day course “Dealing with Difficult People” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the its Workforce Development Series from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. The workshop will be held at the Center for Professional Development at Edison Community College.

Participants will learn how to understand the dynamics of conflict, why people often act as they do and how to stay in control of your reaction to their behavior.

Objectives:

Confront conflict effectively

Disagree without anger

Be able to identify your own “hot buttons”

Give and receive criticism effectively

Interact with the difficult person who works with you

Deal with conflict and anger through the use of a conflict management survey

Dr. David Kelley is instructor for the program. He is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn. and holds a bachelor of science degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee, a master’s degree from the Divinity School of Duke University and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Organization Development from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in California. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and the founder and former pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church of Cape Coral. Dr. Kelley is a Florida licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Fort Myers and Naples. He is a licensed mediator for the state of Florida and has been providing training through the IOG for more than 15 years.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
