Local Collegiate Golfer Selected to Compete in World Championship
FORT MYERS, FL - Collegiate golfer Derek Lamely, pre-management major from Fort Myers, was selected to represent the United States at the Ninth World University Golf Championship Aug. 9 through 15 in Taiwan.
“Derek has been the cornerstone of our team this year,” head men’s golf coach Jim Suttie says. “He will be an unbelievable representative of our community in Southwest Florida.”
Derek won back-to-back tournaments this spring, recently finished second at the national tournament and is the first All-American in Florida Gulf Coast University history to maintain a 72.5 scoring average.
He is one of only six collegiate golfers from the United States to play in the championship at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club in Taoyuan.
Practice rounds take place Aug. 9 and 10 and the tournament’s four rounds begin August 11. The championship finishes Aug. 14 with the final round, medal presentations and closing ceremonies.
“This is an incredible honor, not just for Derek, but also for Florida Gulf Coast University and the entire southwestern region of Florida,” athletic director Carl McAloose says.
