FGCU Names Hinson Men's Assistant Basketball Coach
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University’s head men’s basketball coach Dave Balza announced the hiring of Denny Hinson as full-time assistant coach. Hinson joins Chris Highfield, Dennis Hunt and graduate assistant Dan MacLachlan to round out the coaching staff as the school’s first-ever basketball season fast approaches.
Hinson was assistant boys’ varsity coach at Deltona High School last year and was named head basketball coach recently but turned down the position to join the Eagles staff. Before Deltona, Hinson was head boys’ basketball coach and teacher at Satellite High School. He also spent several years as a teacher and assistant coach at his alma mater, Deland High School.
A former student-athlete, Hinson received his master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University, his baccalaureate degree from Indiana State University and his associate degree from Okaloosa-Walton.
Hinson had a stellar playing career, scoring over 1,000 points in both his collegiate and high school careers. Despite playing the post at 6’4, Hinson led Indiana State in scoring and rebounding as a senior and received the Larry Bird Most Valuable Player award. At Deland High School, Denny was an All-State performer as a senior and a two-time team MVP.
At FGCU, Hinson will be responsible for working with post players and helping to continue the development of the team’s academic enhancement program. He also takes over many of the recruiting duties and will be involved in scouting opponents and making team travel arrangements.
Balza was very impressed with what his latest hire brings to the table. “Denny really fits in well with what we are trying to do here at FGCU,” commented Balza. “He is a quality individual with a wonderful family. He brings a terrific work ethic and excitement to our staff. We are very happy to have attracted such a quality person to our school.”
Denny and his wife Shandris, along with their two sons, Evan and Blake, move to Southwest Florida later this month. FGCU expects Hinson will begin July 1.
