FGCU Announces Women's Basketball Inaugural Schedule

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University’s inaugural women’s basketball schedule announced today features 29 regular season contests including 15 home games. The season commences Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, with the Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-off at TECO Arena.

The Eagles play all other home games in the newly completed Alico Arena on the FGCU campus. The schedule includes four home games against opponents who qualified for the NAIA National Tournament a season ago.

The Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-off features two games against NAIA Division II opponents. FGCU’s opening opponent is Ohio Dominican College. ODC has four retuning starters and is coming off a 22-11 season a year ago and advancement to the NAIA Sweet Sixteen. The following night FGCU hosts Missouri Valley College who is also an NAIA opponent.

The first game in the new, state of the art, on-campus Alico Arena is Monday, Dec. 2 against Warner Southern College. WSC is a member of the Florida Sun Conference. FGCU plays 14 contests against Florida Sun Conference foes.

Five out-of-state opponents will travel to southwest Florida to face the Eagles. On Dec. 15, Saint Francis Joliet (Illinois) visits Alico Arena. Joliet was a NAIA Division I National Tournament participant. Plymouth State College (New Hampshire) visits on Dec. 31. Trinity International University (Illinois) visits on Jan. 2, and on Jan. 7, Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) challenges the Eagles. Cardinal Stritch finished as the #5 ranked team in the country in NAIA Division II. The other two out-of-state visitors are Ohio Dominican College and Missouri Valley College the opening weekend at TECO Arena.

The Eagles travel to Indiana for three games in December. The Eagles’ will face Indiana University South Bend (NAIA Division I), Tri-State University (NAIA Division II) and Indiana Tech (NAIA Division II).

The spring semester features several games with in-state teams. Eagles’ home dates include Flagler College, Warner Southern College, Florida Memorial College, Palm Beach Atlantic and Webber. The home slate also includes a tilt against Nova Southeastern on Feb. 3. Nova Southeastern qualified for the NAIA National Tournament last season.

FGCU launches the season with an open midnight practice at Alico Arena on the night of Monday, Oct. 14 and morning of Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Eagles invite the public to attend the free event.
