FGCU's Kicks Off Fifth-Year Birthday
FORT MYERS, FL - This year, Florida Gulf Coast University celebrates five years of quality higher education service to the Southwest Florida community and at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room and lobby, the faculty and staff will kickoff the anniversary with a one-hour commemoration of the University’s achievements and accomplishments. Members of the media are encouraged to attend.
“Florida Gulf Coast University is delighted to celebrate along with Southwest Florida our five years of higher education service,” President William C. Merwin said. “This marks a milestone in the University’s education, service and research commitment to this region, which has been a remarkably supportive partner in our progress as a developing institution. The University’s impact has been both positive and significant, and our students, faculty and staff are eager to build on the strong foundation as we take FGCU to even greater heights of excellence in the coming years.”
Several units of the University will staff display tables featuring the activities and growth in their area over the last five years. A brief video will highlight progress at FGCU as a whole.
The presentation of a four-tier cake designed and donated by Publix Supermarkets, decorated in FGCU’s blue and green colors, along with five smaller symbolic cakes, will culminate the event.
In addition, FGCU is filming a television commercial featuring University employees during the festivities.
As a young University, FGCU has achieved major milestones and has significantly affected the growth and development of the community economically, socially and culturally.
FGCU expects 4,700 students this fall and now offers 33 undergraduate and 17 graduate majors in five colleges. Already, over 930 First-Time-In-College students are scheduled, an increase of more than 250 freshmen from last year at this time.
Celebrations throughout the semester will emphasize growth - accreditation, quality, student population, campus, academic programs, services, remote centers, Foundation endowment - and how the community has benefited from the accomplishments.
FGCU plans a series of television and radio ads focusing on FGCU’s achievements, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a culminating birthday event and finally graduation on December 15.
