Werntz Named Assistant Women's Basketball Coach
9/9/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University named Lindsay Werntz as assistant women’s basketball coach. This reunites Karl Smesko, FGCU women’s head coach, and Werntz together as Werntz played for Smesko at Indiana University at Fort Wayne, where they went 19-8 her senior year.

“I’m excited and looking forward to working with Coach Smesko,” said Werntz. “I have played under his system, and am looking forward to teaching his unique style of play.”

Prior to attending IUFW, Werntz played a season at Arkansas State University. As high school prep, Werntz was an All-State selection both her junior and senior years at Freeport High School, in Freeport, Ill., while she averaged 19 points per game and 4 assists per game. She was an All-Conference selection all four years and led her teams to two third place finishes at the state championships her sophomore and junior seasons.

Smesko looks forward to having his first ever assistant at FGCU, “I’m excited to have someone who is familiar with our system, and look forward to having Lindsay help implement our style of play.”
