FGCU Center for Civic Engagement Seeks Lots of "Locks of Love"
2/3/2003

FORT MYERS, FL - For only a $10 donation, local hairstylists will cut patrons’ hair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10 in Howard Hall Room 111 at Florida Gulf Coast University to raise money for the nonprofit organization Locks of Love. If the stylist removes 10 inches in length or more, the cut is free and the tresses will be given to needy children across America.

Locks of Love, based in Lake Worth, Fla., provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children with medical hair loss.

Founded in 1997, the organization has helped over 850 children. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive from around the country resulting from national publicity Locks of Love receives in newspapers, magazines and television programs.

The custom-fitted hair prosthetics are provided for free or on a sliding scale by financial need. Locks of Love says the value of the custom hairpieces is about $3,000.

The FGCU Center for Civic Engagement, which was created to provide structure for realizing social responsibilities as activity engaged citizens, is sponsoring the event.
