FGCU Naples Center Presents Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Portrayal
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Naples Center invites the public to attend a performance by Betty Jean Steinshouer portraying Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, 2 p.m., Thursday, March 11 at the FGCU Naples Center, 1010 Fifth Ave. S.
Steinshouer, an Independent Scholar and Chautauqua Performer, will portray the “real” Rawlings based on years of research into Rawlings’ character.
This is an opportunity to meet the hard-drinking, chain-smoking, cussing author who put Cracker Florida on the map with her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Yearling in 1939 and followed up with Cross Creek in 1942. In spite of Rawlings’ personal struggles, she lived a life of beauty and sacrifice for her art and for her beloved Florida.
The free program is funded by the Florida Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization funded by private donations, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Florida’s Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs.
