FGCU Students, Faculty, Staff Spend Second 'Service Saturday' in Charlotte County Tomorrow
9/24/2004

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University students, faculty and staff arrive 10 a.m. tomorrow in Punta Gorda for their second consecutive Saturday helping to clear debris left behind from recent hurricanes in Charlotte County.

Last week, 39 members of the FGCU community volunteering for a "Service Saturday" - the FGCU name for the weekend service projects - rode a bus sponsored by the Student Government Association to First Baptist Church in Punta Gorda. Upon arrival, leaders assign the group to small units that travel to specific locations for clean up efforts.

The bus leaves from the FGCU Student Union at 8:30 a.m. The event counts as Service Learning credit for students and FGCU hopes to continue future Service Saturdays devoted to hurricane relief.

For more information, contact director of the Center for Civic Engagement Linda Summers at (239) 590-7016 or assistant dean for Student affairs Tim Wise at (239) 590-7900.
