FGCU Launches Recruitment Campaign to Attract Local Students to New Engineering Degree Programs
10/5/2004

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the launch of a recruitment campaign beginning mid-October to attract local freshmen to the inaugural fall 2005 class in the School of Engineering.

FGCU will recruit in the local service region of Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties to attract between 30 and 40 freshmen with strong math and science skills in addition to meeting the University's admissions requirements.

In subsequent years, FGCU will recruit across the state and nationally, and begin accepting transfer students in academic year 2007-08. FGCU expects at least 300 students enrolled in the engineering program by 2010.

The School of Engineering offers degree programs in bioengineering, engineering management, and environmental and civil engineering.

Located in the College of Business, the School will also provide engineering students with a competitive edge by educating engineering students about common business practices and knowledge that they can bring to their professional careers.

After an incubation period, FGCU plans to develop the School into a full College of Engineering.

FGCU first announced the new degree programs in July after receiving a strategic $5 million gift from The Whitaker Foundation. The gift will help construct a 50,000 square-foot facility to house the degree programs.
