300 High School Students Serve as Delegates to Model United Nations March 10-11 at Florida Gulf Coast University
2/10/2005

FORT MYERS, FL - After months of preparation, 300 of the area's brightest high school students get a chance to show what they learned when they arrive as delegates to the 12th Annual Southwest Florida Model United Nations conference, Thursday and Friday, March 10-11 at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Simulating the actual workings of the United Nations, each school's delegation works through various issues to preserve peace, and maintain and defend the positions of their respective country, which may be opposite of their own personal beliefs. This year, student delegates from 20 high schools in Southwest Florida will attend the conference.

Committees at the 2005 conference include the UN Security Council, the World Trade Organization, the Global Climate Change Convention, the International Atomic Energy Agency as well as the major bodies of the UN General Assembly. Each committee examines topics that their counterparts at the real United Nations are currently addressing.

Student delegates research the issues and the perspectives of the country they represent. Debates during the conference reflect the clash of interests and values that occurs within the real United Nations.

The Naples Council on World Affairs, which provides volunteer judges to evaluate the performance of student delegates, helps FGCU organize the conference. The Naples Council on World Affairs awards scholarships to top delegates and this year, the conference features scholarships jointly awarded by FGCU and the Naples Council on World Affairs for students who plan to attend FGCU.

The conference's committees are chaired by FGCU volunteers, many of whom are members of the FGCU Model UN Club. The training of chairs and the development of the conference's agenda is overseen by FGCU associate professor of Political Science Richard Coughlin, who serves as the academic director of the Southwest Florida Model United Nations.
