FGCU Hosts Annual Conference on Homelessness May 27
FORT MYERS, FL - The Southwest Florida Coalition for the Homeless conducts its annual conference 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 27 at Florida Gulf Coast University for the public to discuss Southwest Florida's homeless issues and solutions. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Whitaker Hall foyer.
"It's an Ill Wind.Hurricane Recovery Issues for Homeless People" features leaders in homeless programming and policy who speak with an emphasis on the needs of Southwest Florida.
"This conference is the major opportunity for all homeless service providers, advocates, housing programs, social service agencies and citizens interested in homeless issues to get together and learn what is happening in Southwest Florida, the state and the nation," Coalition executive director and FGCU associate professor of Social Work Gary Lounsberry said.
Executive director of the National Coalition for the Homeless Michael Stoops provides the featured address on the civil rights of people who are homeless and the growing trend to attempt to criminalize being homeless.
Other speakers include member of the State Board on Homelessness Karen Hawes, member of the Florida Coalition on Homelessness Meg Geltner, and director of Recovery for Charlotte County Robert P. Hebert.
A panel discussion addresses hurricane recovery for the homeless in Southwest Florida.
Breakout sessions include information about advocating for the civil rights of people who are homeless, study of the social and emotional impacts of the hurricane in DeSoto County, hurricane impact on HIV/AIDS programs, forums on the impact of the state budget and HUD initiatives, and student learning opportunities in responding to community crisis.
General registration is $35 for up to two participants and $35 for three or more. Student registration is $15. Registration includes meals and materials.
Mental health and substance abuse professionals who attend are eligible for six Continuing Education Units. The fee is $10 for each certificate.
