FGCU, 20th Judicial Circuit Host Second Annual
Drug Court Symposium, Graduation May 5
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University and the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida invite members of the media to the Drug Court Symposium and drug court graduation 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, May 5 in the Student Union ballroom to celebrate National Drug Court Month.
The symposium includes a graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. for drug court participants who recently completed the drug court program. Members of the drug court team including the judge, prosecutor, public defender, law enforcement and treatment professionals, as well as graduates' families, attend the event.
In addition to highlighting graduates' accomplishments, the ceremony shows the successes of the drug court program since it was established in the 20th Judicial Circuit, which includes Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties. Drug courts hear cases of drug offenders charged with non-violent drug related crimes.
Offenders undergo intense treatment and counseling that includes random drug testing and regular appearances before a judge.
The program utilizes a combination of positive incentives and graduated sanctions, including jail time, to ensure compliance with drug court rules.
