FORT MYERS, FL - Area students are returning to their alma maters this fall, but for 15 juniors and seniors in Southwest Florida, high school has a grander meaning as they enter one of the area's newest and most distinctive schools tomorrow and Friday, the Florida Gulf Coast University Collegiate High School.
The inaugural class gets started this Thursday and Friday, Aug. 10 and 11 by attending orientation along with other FGCU incoming freshmen.
At this rare school, exceptionally qualified and motivated students get a head start on their college courses as they prepare for careers in science, mathematics, engineering or education.
The early admission program allows them to meet the requirements for both their high school diplomas and college freshman and sophomore years.
Students maintain a rigorous academic schedule and attend classes with other FGCU students. At the end of the two-year program, students earn high school diplomas and up to two years of college credit or an Associate of Arts degree.
The FGCU Collegiate High School begins accepting applications for fall 2007 in January.
The FGCU Collegiate High School accepts a limited number of high achieving students from the five-county region based on an admission process, which includes transcripts, letters of recommendation, SAT or ACT scores, essays and interviews.
Students currently enrolled in public school do not pay tuition or books at FGCU Collegiate High School. Additionally, students shorten the amount of time needed to obtain a degree. Transportation is not provided.
The goal of the FGCU Collegiate High School is to more closely link high school to the postsecondary years for students who are academically and socially ready. The effort is also in response to the demands from economic and workforce development for more graduates in the fields of mathematics, science and education.
Photo opportunities and interviews are available Thursday and Friday
