FGCU Appoints Donna Price Henry to Dean of College of Arts and Sciences
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the appointment of interim dean Donna Price Henry to the position of permanent Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences effective August 1.
"Dr. Price Henry has served in an interim capacity in this position since May 2005. She has done an outstanding job in the college and has the full support of the leadership of the University. I am confident that the college will continue to flourish under her strong and capable leadership," Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bonnie L. Yegidis said.
Price Henry served as associate dean of the college from 1997- 2001. As Faculty Senate President, she served as member of FGCU Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2005, and served as founding director for the Whitaker Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education from 2004 to 2005.
She facilitated development of the program for construction of Whitaker Hall, and was co-investigator for Project LAUNCH, a $1.7 million grant-funded project from the Florida Department of Education to support in-service training of area science and mathematics teachers.
As a founding faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences, Price Henry developed the curriculum for the biology program. She was also a member of the faculty who developed a curriculum for the interdisciplinary core of all degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences.
"As the college grows to meet enrollment demands, the focus of college faculty will remain on providing a quality academic experience to our students," Price Henry said. "Interdisciplinary experiences, undergraduate research and service learning will remain hallmarks of college graduates."
Price Henry recently presented papers detailing her reform efforts in undergraduate science education at the International Conference on First Year Experience in Southampton, England.
"My vision is for the College of Arts and Sciences academic programs to provide a model for best practices in undergraduate education grounded in liberal arts and sciences training."
Price Henry earned a doctorate in physiology from Thomas Jefferson University and a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Pennsylvania both in Philadelphia, Pa.
Prior to FGCU, Price Henry was chair for the mathematics and physical sciences department at Saint Thomas University in Miami from 1990 to 1996.
Price Henry remains actively involved in the FGCU campus community serving on the University Lecture Series and the Campus Master Planning Committees.
She currently serves as secretary of the Foundation for Future Scientists Board of Directors which oversees the State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida.
Price Henry founded a two-week intensive summer research program on the FGCU campus for 50 area middle school students through an endowment by a local donor.
