FGCU Sailing Club Races First Regatta
This Weekend at USF
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Sailing Club races its first all-day regatta on Saturday, Sept., 2 and Sunday, Sept. 3 at the University of South Florida.
The mission of the FGCU Sailing Club (http://sailingclub.fgcu.edu) is to teach sailing as a sport and recreational activity. The group provides opportunities for cruising, racing and recreation while promoting teamwork, self-confidence and seamanship. Students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to join.
The South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, the regional district of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, included FGCU as a new member at its annual meeting in January.
"In the first year as a member of SAISA, the FGCU Sailing Club is restricted to compete in only a few regattas that do not count for points," faculty advisor Sandra O'Brien said. "This is so we can get into the college racing atmosphere slowly and do it right. Over the next couple of years we will gain more rights to regattas and will be able to host them at FGCU."
Other dates scheduled for the regattas include Sept. 9 and 10 at Eckerd College; Sept. 16 and 17 at the College of Charleston, in Charleston, S.C.; Sept. 23 and 24 at Rollins College; and Oct. 7 and 8 at Georgia Tech.
The governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and some parts of Canada is committed to promoting outstanding sportsmanship and competition at a variety of levels, according to the organization's Web site.
