FGCU Hosts Its First 'Whitaker Saturday Workshop' Saturday, Sept. 23
FORT MYERS, FL - The Whitaker Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education at Florida Gulf Coast University hosts the "Whitaker Saturday Workshop" 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 23 for teachers interested in new ways to teach and assess science and mathematics through space-related themes.
This first Whitaker Saturday Workshop, 'Project LAUNCH in the Classroom,' provides information about teaching with telescopes and assessing class research projects.
Participants learn how to utilize the telescope for the transit of the planet Mercury in front of the disk of the Sun that takes place on November 8.
As part of the workshop, participants learn how to use the telescopes that Whitaker Center is donating to 33 schools that participated in Project LAUNCH over the last two years to encourage teachers to increase interest of space science for students.
Purchase of telescopes was made possible through a Florida Mathematics and Science Partnership grant.
The telescopes are suited for classroom setting. The instruments provide views of celestial objects onto a view screen. This enables safe solar viewing for an entire class at a time, allowing students to safely study the Sun.
While the workshop is designed as follow-up to the Project LAUNCH summer institutes, all teachers are invited to attend for a nominal fee of $25.
