Scholars Club Honors Southwest Florida's High Academic Achievers During Ceremony May 4; FGCU Interim President is Keynote Speaker
4/23/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - The Public Schools Enrichment Partnership Scholars Club at Florida Gulf Coast University holds its 18th Annual Academic Achievement Awards Celebration from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 4 in the Student Union ballroom to recognize the scholastic achievement, leadership and volunteer service of local minority and at-risk students in grades K-16.

Keynote speaker is FGCU Interim President Richard Pegnetter.

This year's awards program is titled, "Students + Supporters = Super Heroes." Scholars Club's mission is to provide enrichment programs and services and to help "close the achievement gap." Scholars Club was founded in 1989 by a high school student, Christian Duffus, at Fort Myers High School. Since then the organization has grown significantly, and now annually serves 1,000 at-risk, minority and multi-cultural K-16 children and youth in Southwest Florida.

Scholars Club invites the public and area businesses to support this year's event with table sponsorships. Table sponsorships for a contribution of $500 entitle the donor to two event tickets and provide opportunities for eight students to attend the event. These contributions help defray some of the costs for 250 at-risk high school students to attend the awards celebration. A portion of the Table Sponsorship contributions is tax deductible. The event includes dinner and entertainment.

"The average GPA of a graduating Scholars Club high school senior is 3.4. This event celebrates their hard work. We have discovered that if you set high expectations, give students encouragement and exposure to positive role models and experiences, that you will get excellent results. We have honored 15 valedictorians since 1999," said Scholars Club executive director Deborah Dahlmanns.

Table sponsors are requested to call Pat Oliver (239) 590-7404 for more details.
