FGCU Holds Press Conference to Discuss Research Findings of
Agribusiness in Southwest Florida
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University conducts a press conference 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 5 in Conference Room 309, Academic Building V to discuss the findings of a research study on the future of agribusiness in Southwest Florida.
Agriculture is one of the largest industries in the state of Florida. As part of its mission to serve the greater business community in Southwest Florida's five-county area, the Lutgert College of Business undertook a major research effort this year to investigate the future of agribusiness in the region. Over 25 key executives from agribusiness concerns, real estate development, environmental concerns and politicians were interviewed to determine what strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats exist for the future of farming in this region.
While agribusiness continues to play an important role in the regional economy, significant threats such as population pressures and real estate development, labor issues, increasing costs and competition, crop diseases and tropical storms continue to threaten the long-term viability of farming in Southwest Florida. Topics that will be discussed include:
Will there be agribusiness in this region in the future, and if so, what form is it likely to take?
Can farming survive real estate development pressures, and how does it fit in state conservation plans?
Will the state known for citrus continue to be competitive in global food markets?
What options are available to agriculture? What are the unique natural advantages of Southwest Florida farming? Will they be sufficient?
Will an increasing concern about national security interests and food production propel agriculture into the spotlight?
What strategies are available to farming in Southwest Florida?
These and other issues will be addressed when principal investigators for the report meet with the press.
