FGCU Employees Establish Endowed Scholarship
9/4/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - Employees and friends of the Florida Gulf Coast University Physical Plant and FGCU Foundation recently established a scholarship fund that will financially assist qualified students enrolled in environmental studies, civil engineering or environmental engineering annually, in perpetuity.

The Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded after the fund reaches $10,000. The current balance in the endowed scholarship fund is close to $7,000 including gifts from employees and ATP Engineering South.

While serving as an ambassador for the 2006 employee annual giving campaign, assistant director of Finance and Business Operations in Physical Plant Vikki McConnell realized that collective donations from the department could result in an endowment. Creation of the endowment scholarship fund allows employees in Physical Plant to support both students and its departmental mission.

"Students in our department are a constant reminder of why we are here and who we are here to serve," McConnell said.

"Employees contribute to the fund, share information with business and community members, and hope that additional financial support will help more students earn environmental and engineering degrees. The Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship is an opportunity to enhance relationships with business partners as we work together to ensure students become educated in fields of our common interests."

Director of Physical Plant Jim Hehl, said "This is something we started in Physical Plant, which makes us very proud. Perhaps other donors will see our employees' generosity and be a part of this collaborative effort to enhance the student growth in engineering and environmental majors and continue to provide opportunities for future FGCU students."

The Physical Plant department at FGCU provides campus operations and maintenance. The department is actively involved with students, employing over 60 students since 1997, including 25 work study and 12 international students.
