FGCU Foundation Presents Recipient of The Margaret and Peter Sulick September 11th Fund With Award Tomorrow
9/10/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - On the tragic anniversary of Sept. 11, Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation honors Kaitlyn Meisenheimer of Lake Ronkonkoma, New York, recipient of The Margaret and Peter Sulick September 11th Scholarship, at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Student Union 214 during a brief presentation ceremony. Donor Margaret "Dee" Sulick will present the award.

Meisenheimer, a freshman at FGCU, attended Sachem High School in New York. Her dad was a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. He worked in Suffolk County, New York.

The eighteen year old currently lives on campus. Inspired by her second grade teacher, she is majoring in education and is taking 15 credit hours. In addition, this semester she is observing in a classroom as part of a course requirement.

She and her older sister, Lauren, have danced for 15 years. They performed several dance numbers in memory of their dad. Her sister's story about their dad was published in "Cosmo Girl," and she appeared on the "Today Show."

Her mother, who recently remarried and lives in Land O' Lakes, encouraged Meisenheimer to look at colleges in Florida. "I fell in love with FGCU," said Meisenheimer. "I could see myself on this campus."

The Margaret and Peter Sulick September 11th Scholarship is a $20,000 four-year award ($5,000/year) to help cover the cost of education for up to four qualifying students. Recipients will be children of uniformed firefighters, police officers or emergency medical technicians who lost their lives as a result of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
