FGCU Hosts Community Day Open House Oct. 27
in Celebration of 10th Year Anniversary
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University hosts Community Day Open House in celebration of its 10th anniversary 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27. The public is invited to attend and join the festivities.
Opening ceremonies will begin with a welcome by President-elect Wilson G. Bradshaw at 9:15 a.m. at center stage located near the Student Services Plaza. Throughout the day guests will be treated to a wide range of activities. Professors will present mini lectures on topics from the national election, to student managed investment funds, to the environmental history of Southwest Florida. Most presentations are 30 minutes long to allow guests to experience as many activities as possible.
On hand in the Library atrium, FGCU professors and staff will autograph books they have authored. Visual and performing arts will include art exhibits and a drama presentation. Campus and housing tours will demonstrate the tremendous growth the FGCU physical plant has seen in its first ten years. Eco tours including a birding event reflect FGCU's environmental mission.
For the young at heart, WGCU public media presents Clifford the Big Red Dog and Walkaround Grover from Sesame Street. Bring your camera! The Mote Marine mobile Aquarium will display creatures from the Gulf of Mexico. Rosie Emery's fun songs about cool critters will get children on their feet to sing and dance.
FGCU's new swim and diving teams will compete against Georgia Tech, FAU and Tampa. The men's basketball scrimmage is another highlight in the athletic area.
Community Day includes Eagle Expo and Family Weekend activities. At Eagle Expo prospective students and their parents may participate in admissions and financial aid workshops.
Community Day will end with a "Scholarship Quest." Guests who participate in the quest will be eligible for a full, four-year scholarship to FGCU. Upon entering the campus each visitor will receive directions for completing the scholarship quest. The drawing will take place at center stage at 2:45 p.m. Participants do not have to be present to win.
A free barbecue lunch will be served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. under a tent located next to the parking garage.
Community Day visitors are asked to park at Germain Arena and take an FGCU parking shuttle bus to the campus. Parking shuttles will run throughout the day.
